Slime are using as heroes for sacrifice, not for battles. They help you to increase a level of main skills of your heroes. If you want to use them, enter the Altar structure (Enter tab) and tap on a hero you want to improve. Then push on the Consume button. You will see a list of heroes for sacrificing. Select slimes and tap on Consume. You will get skill points. The higher a skill level of your hero, the more slimes you need for upgrading to the next level.
You can always hire slimes with shards in the Altar structure.
